Somerville Lake was authorized by the Flood Control Act approved 03 September 1954 (Public Law (PL) 83-780) for the purpose of flood control, water conservation storage, recreation, and fish and wildlife enhancement. The Plan guides the stewardship of natural and cultural resources and the provision of outdoor recreation facilities with opportunities to ensure sustainability of federal land associated with Somerville Lake. The Master Plan is intended to serve as a comprehensive land and recreational management plan with a life span of 25 years.
